Politics: SP = Sickness Personified

Mulayam Singh; now Abu Azmi – Samajwadi Party (from Uttar Pradesh) is indeed covering itself with shame and earning the disgust of the India by the thoughts and ideas expressed by the bigwigs of the Party.

Mulayam Singh (talking about rapists and the recently introduced death penalty of repeat rapists – as in the Shakti Mills case): “Ladkon se aisi galtiyan ho jaati hain, to iska ye matlab nahin ki phaansi de di jaye (Boys do make such mistakes, but that does not mean that they should be hanged).”

Really? Is this the same sentiment you will have if the victim was a lady from your family? A daughter? A daughter-in-law? A wife? A mother? A niece? And what if the ladke commit the “galti” more than once with the same lady from your family or another member of your family?

Uttar Pradesh (UP) is not exactly amongst the most law-abiding or safe States in India. The nation is struggling to make its women safe. In fact, safety of women has become a key point of the 2014 General Elections. Rapes, abuse and violence against women is on the rise. UP is one of the leaders in the anti-women statistics. In such a scenario this is a reckless sentiment and dangerous leadership.

If Mulayam Singh genuinely feels this way and his outlook percolates down in his Party, God help women.

If he doesn’t think this way and has made this statement to woo the biggest vote-bank possible – men – God help women.

Abu Azmi, a senior Party member was asked about this statement by Mulayam Singh.
Statements from Abu Azmi’s interview: “It’s the death penalty for rape in Islam. But here, nothing happens to the woman; only the man bears the punishment.”

“If a woman is caught, then both she and the boy should be punished. As per Islam, if someone has (sex) with consent, it’s the death penalty even then.”

“ In India, there’s death penalty for rape, but when there’s consent, there’s no death penalty. The solution is that if any girl, whether married or unmarried, goes with a guy with or without her consent, they should be hanged.”

Seriously?

His embarrassed daughter-in-law, actress Ayesha Takia and son, Farhan Azmi (contesting from Mumbai North Central on SP ticket) immediately took to Twitter to protest, to distance and to quickly redeem themselves (and Abu Azmi) from this incredibly preposterous, bizarre, outrageous and absurd statements.

In 2009 the Samajwadi Party had a decidedly anti-English and anti-computers manifesto.

In 2014, they clearly have an anti-women agenda.

Yet, today Samajwadi Party is the incumbent State Government in Uttar Pradesh. Mulayam Singh is the Chairman of the Party and his son, Akhilesh Yadav is the incumbent Chief Minister of the State.

God help India.
